Braden Holtby made one of the most amazing saves in Stanley Cup playoff history on Wednesday, but the Washington Capitals goalie has no time to pat himself on the back after he single-handedly preserved a win for his team.Holtby’s seemingly impossible paddle save came in the third period with the Capitals leading 3-2 over the Las Vegas Golden Knights. The keeper later told reporters he is focused on winning a championship, not what Twitter is saying about him. Golden State Warriors forward Andre Iguodala will miss his fifth straight game with a bone bruise in his knee to open the NBA Finals.The Warriors confirmed Wednesday that Iguodala would miss Wednesday’s Game 1 against the Cleveland Cavaliers. While the player is “making progress,” he is still in pain and his left knee remains inflamed, meaning he’ll be evaluated again prior to Game 2. Last we heard, Iguodala was still trying to figure out what, precisely, was causing his injury. The school is located not far from Indianapolis, about 27 miles to the north. Jason Seaman, a seventh-grade science teacher, has been credited for saving lives by bravely confronting the armed student, getting shot three times in the process by thwarting the attack. The Magic are hiring Steve Clifford to be their new head coach, reports ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. League sources tell Wojnarowski that Orlando has reached an agreement on a four-year contract with the former Hornets coach. Brandon Marshall announces he has signed with Seahawks
The NFL’s wide receiver free agent pool got a little smaller on Tuesday, and that is not because Dez Bryant found a home. Brandon Marshall, another veteran receiver who has been looking for work, announced that he has signed with the Seattle Seahawks.Marshall posted a series of three photos on Instagram in which he shared the big news. Marshall was released by the New York Giants this offseason, and he visited with the Seahawks earlier this month. The 34-year-old had a disappointing year in 2017 that was cut short by injury, but Seattle has lost Jimmy Graham and Paul Richardson to free agency and could use the receiving depth.The terms of the deal are not yet known, but it seems unlikely that Marshall would get big money at this point in his career. He has yet to appear in the playoffs, and Seattle should have a decent chance to be competitive in 2018. Tom Wilson avoids suspension over Game 1 incident
Game 1 of the NHL Stanley Cup Finals took place last night, and perhaps not surprisingly Tom Wilson of the Washington Capitals was involved in another questionable incident. Wilson appeared to hit Vegas Golden Knights forward Jon Marchessault well after he had distributed the puck, resulting in a skirmish and calls for another suspension. However, Kevin Allen of USA Today reports that there will be no disciplinary hearing for Wilson for the hit on Marchessault.Wilson has already been involved in several incidents in the playoffs, and was suspended for three games after hitting Zach Aston-Reese up high in the second round. Heading into the league's ultimately decision, Greg Wyshynski of ESPN reported how the league was still considering what to do about the latest Wilson hit. The Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Boston Celtics on the road in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals despite not having Kevin Love, and they may have to begin the NBA Finals the same way.Love, who suffered a concussion in Game 6 against Boston, remained in the NBA’s concussion protocol as of Tuesday. With Game 1 of the NBA Finals taking place on Thursday, Cavs head coach Tyronn Lue told reporters he is unsure if Love will be available. It would obviously be a major blow to Cleveland if Love is unable to play, especially now that they are facing an offensive powerhouse like Golden State. The Tampa Bay Rays are trying to do things a little differently these days. And on Sunday, it would lead to something not seen since 2002. And while there’s an argument to be made against this strategy, the Rays did make it work against the Baltimore Orioles. Sergio Romo made another start, only lasting 0.1 inning before giving way to Vidal Nuño — who would get Tampa Bay through the next three despite surrendering four walks.But then in came Austin Pruitt, a hurler who made eight starts last season but served out of the bullpen for 22 of his 30 appearances. While the Cavaliers didn’t have Kevin Love to turn to Sunday night, Jeff Green would fill in. And he would do an admirable job as well, one might say.By the end of the night, Green put up 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting to go along with eight rebounds. Tristan Thompson put up 10 while J.R. Smith added 12, but the Cavaliers as a team shot just 9-of-36 (25 percent) from long range. And then there’s LeBron, finishing with 35 points on 12-of-24 from the field to go along with 15 rebounds and nine assists. When one thinks of Nick Young, one of the last words that will come up is defense. More often, things along the lines of ill-advised three’s, his drama with D’Angelo Russell, and his “Swaggy P” nickname.However, on Saturday night Young came off the bench and played great wing defense in the second half of the Golden State Warriors’ 115-86 throttling of the Houston Rockets in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals. If one had a choice of a defensive player to rely upon deep in the NBA playoffs, Rodman is on top of the list. The San Francisco Giants have been without ace Madison Bumgarner all season. But prior to Sunday’s game, manager Bruce Bochy left the door open for Bumgarner to possibly return as early as Friday. Padres acquire Phil Hughes from Twins
The Padres have acquired right-hander Phil Hughes, cash and the 74th pick in June’s draft from the Twins for young catcher Janigson Villalobos, per announcements from both teams.The Twins designated Hughes for assignment earlier this week, even though they still owed him the rest of his $13.2M salary this year and another $13.2M in 2019. Now, Minnesota will eat the remainder of Hughes’ salary this year, but San Diego will pay nearly half the tab next season, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com suggests.In a best-case scenario for the rebuilding Padres, the 31-year-old Hughes would reemerge as a viable starter or reliever with the club. However, there doesn’t seem to be much hope on either front, given that Hughes has recently undergone two different surgeries to address thoracic outlet syndrome – which is often a death knell for pitchers. Those procedures ended each of Hughes’ previous two seasons prematurely, and have played a role in the bloated 5.99 ERA he has logged across 124 2/3 innings (33 appearances, 22 starts)

Report: Teddy Bridgewater’s trade value ‘trending upward’
Teddy Bridgewater was basically a forgotten man at the start of the offseason, and the New York Jets signed him to serve as an insurance policy and/or prove himself enough to inspire other teams to make trade offers. So far, he has shown he could be capable of accomplishing both of those goals for the franchise.ESPN’s Rich Cimini wrote on Sunday that the Jets “couldn’t be happier with Bridgewater” through the early portion of offseason workouts. Cimini also notes that the 25-year-old’s trade value is increasing, but he may just end up being the best man to start for the Jets. Kobe Bryant weighs in on greatness debate
After LeBron James took his Cleveland Cavaliers to the NBA Finals with a Game 7 win on Sunday night, many relaunched the discussion about The King’s place in history.James has now reached eight straight NBA Finals and nine overall for his career. The achievements are incredible and undeniable. Fans and observers were left calling LeBron “The Goat” and saying he’s become the best player ever (take a look here). In response to that, Kobe Bryant decided to weigh in and say that “We can enjoy one without tearing down one. I love what he’s doing. Watch: Ronald Acuna helped off field after ugly leg injury
Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna suffered a frightening-looking knee injury in Sunday’s game against the Boston Red Sox.Acuna was running through first base when he appeared to twist his knee and had to come out of the game. Acuna is one of baseball’s brightest young players and has made an immediate impact for the Braves since his callup, hitting five home runs since making his big league debut. Hopefully the injury isn’t as serious as it looks.

Danica Patrick gets emotional talking about Indy 500 crash
On Sunday during Lap 68 of the Indy 500, Danica Patrick crashed out of the race as her car hit the outside wall, spun around and rolled backward toward the infield area.It was a very bitter way to end her racing career, as Patrick has made it clear the Indy 500 was her final professional race. Not surprisingly, she was a bit emotional afterward as she explained what happened following her release from the Infield hospital.Meghan McKeown of WISH-TV shared video of Patrick’s post-crash interview with reporters. Patrick, who broke down gender barriers in racing in a big way, also saw her NASCAR finale end in a crash as well.It’s obviously not the way she dreamed her career in racing, but there are so many factors outside the control of these drivers, and we’re just happy she got away from both wrecks unscathed.

Aaron Judge, one day after setting yet another MLB record on his 14th home run of the season, continues to wow at the plate.During Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels, the New York Yankees slugger tagged a single to right-center that left his bat at 119.9 miles per hour. That’s the hardest-hit ball for anyone during the 2018 season. The crazy thing is, the ball Judge hit was only 95.1 miles per hour coming in. The power this man produces with his bat is just incredible.

Clayton Kershaw slated to return to mound Thursday
The Los Angeles Dodgers look like they might finally be on the upswing, and Clayton Kershaw’s imminent return should only help.Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed Sunday that Kershaw would return on Thursday from left biceps tendinitis that has kept him sidelined. Kershaw’s last start came on May 1, with his rehab picking up in recent weeks. The Dodgers have understandably been cautious not to rush him back given his importance to their team. It helps that the team has finally started to turn things around recently after a slow start, having won seven of their last nine. Kershaw’s return only serves to make them stronger, and perhaps now they can make a run in the NL West.

Twins trade Phil Hughes to Padres
The San Diego Padres have picked up a bit of pitching help.The Padres acquired Phil Hughes from the Minnesota Twins on Sunday in exchange for a minor league catcher. Hughes was designated for assignment by the Twins last week after posting a 6.75 ERA in 12 innings with the team this season. After a successful 2014, injuries have derailed his career, including a 2016 surgery to correct thoracic outlet syndrome. While other teams may have had interest, it’s the Padres who pulled the trigger in the hopes of finding something left in the 31-year-old’s arm.

Julio Jones had Atlanta Falcons fans in a tizzy recently when he made some drastic changes to his Twitter account. WATCH: Zach Veach's car catches fire during pit stop at Indy 500
If you were watching the Indy 500 Sunday afternoon, you likely did a double-take midway through the race as Zach Veach was exiting Pit Lane.Flames were dancing atop his car, and then when ABC went back to the replay it showed the car, and the pit crew, had been engulfed in flames for a moment. Thankfully, Veach and his pit crew were okay, and the flames petered out quickly enough. Still, that was a frightening scene that could have potentially been a lot worse.

It reminds me of the tactical strategy used by the Phoenix Suns' "Seven Seconds or Less" in the early 2000's. The impact of that strategy now has a long lasting impacting on today's current NBA. Other NBA strategies are Sam Hinkie's tanking strategy for accumulating draft picks, and Tex Winter's triangle offense.

Mookie Betts scratched from game due to muscle tightness
Mookie Betts was a last-second scratch for the Boston Red Sox for their game against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday, and the team says the star outfielder is dealing with some muscle tightness.According to an official announcement from the Red Sox, Betts is listed as day to day due to “left side tightness.” Considering he was in the starting lineup until the last second, it’s probably safe to assume the injury is nothing too serous. Still, it’s always a concern when your best player goes down, and Betts has been just that in Boston this year. He’s having a career year and leads baseball by a wide margin with his .359 average. Yoenis Cespedes reportedly nearing rehab assignment
The New York Mets are hoping to get ailing outfielder Yoenis Cespedes back in the lineup fairly soon.According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, the Mets hope to send Cespedes, who hasn’t played since May 13, on a rehab assignment by the end of the week. Cespedes has been sidelined by a strained right hip flexor, the latest in a series of concerning injuries to the star outfielder. He was hitting only .255 before going down with the injury, though he did have eight home runs in the early stages of the season.

Kemba Walker could be prime trade candidate this summer
The lack of teams with cap space and a weak crop of free agent point guards could work to the Hornets’ advantage if they decide to trade Kemba Walker, writes Rick Bonnell of The Charlotte Observer. That’s the assessment of ESPN’s Bobby Marks, a former executive with the Nets, who thinks Walker will reach his peak trade value this summer. Walker has one year left on his contract, and Marks states that teams would rather pick up a player in the offseason rather than close to the trade deadline.Addressing trade rumors during the season, team owner Michael Jordan said he would only consider moving Walker if it meant getting an All-Star in return. Marks considers that unrealistic, saying a lottery pick is likely the best the Hornets can hope for. Yankees may be interested in Cole Hamels
The Rangers may trade left-hander Cole Hamels in the next couple months, and “it looks like the Yankees could be interested,” Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe writes. Although the Yankees are among 20 teams on Hamels’ no-trade list, the 34-year-old suggested earlier this week that he wouldn’t block a move to a contender. New York certainly looks as if it’ll contend all season, which would appeal to Hamels, and the team figures to end up acquiring him or another legitimate starter at some point this summer. Whether it is a backyard, in the frigid conditions of Gillette Stadium during a New England Patriots playoff game, or … on the water in the summer — expect Tom Brady to always be tossing around the pigskin somewhere in the world. While much of the attention to this year’s Stanley Cup will go towards the players, especially Washington Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin and Vegas Golden Knights’ Marc-Andre Fleury, much of the spotlight should be shining on the Golden Knights’ general manager, George McPhee. The GM, who also worked as the general manager from 1997 to 2014 of the Washington Capitals, has had a hand in more than 75 percent of the players that will be on the ice on Monday.McPhee is already responsible for putting together the Golden Knights roster from Fleury to William Karlsson to Jon Marchessault, to the often criticized deadline moves of acquiring Tomas Tatar and Ryan Reaves, both who have scored critical goals in the postseason. At this point, Cristiano Ronaldo is synonymous with Real Madrid. That’s nothing new to anybody who’s been watching the game for the past decade. But yesterday was special even for him. With their 3-1 victory over Liverpool in the Champions League Final, Madrid would capture their third consecutive continental crown. That’s historic on its own, of course. But now Ronaldo has five such honors to himself, including one with Manchester United (2007-08).Aside from a World Cup trophy, there’s nothing he hasn’t won. Packers' new offensive staff working on play design
We heard last month that the Packers would be going “back to Page 1” of their playbook, but as Jason Wilde of the Wisconsin State Journal writes, Green Bay is not going to be making any wholesale changes to its offense. In light of all of the new voices on the offensive side of the ball this year — Joe Philbin is back as OC, Frank Cignetti Jr. is in as quarterbacks coach, and there are several other staff changes besides — it made sense for all involved to thoroughly review the team’s play design and philosophy. But as Philbin said, “It’s been a process of refining, enhancing, tweaking, as opposed to, ‘Yeah we scrubbed it down.’ Yes, we went page by page. (But) we’re not starting from scratch here. These players in that locker room, they’ve done some great things.” Philbin, of course, is primarily referring to star quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Jeff Green to start in place of Kevin Love in Game 7
The Cleveland Cavaliers will be without Kevin Love in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals on Sunday, and they are hoping Jeff Green can be the one to pick up most of the slack.Cavs head coach Ty Lue told reporters at Sunday morning’s shootaround that Green will start in place of Love, who is out with a concussion. Green had his best game of the series and arguably the entire postseason in Game 6, as he scored 14 points and blocked two shots. Brad Stevens and the Boston Celtics will have had more time to prepare for facing him heading into Sunday’s game, but Cleveland will likely need Green to be equally effective in order to win on the road.Love ended up in the NBA’s concussion protocol after a nasty collision with Jayson Tatum on Friday night. Teams worrying John Tavares could stay with Islanders
The addition of Lou Lamoriello to the New York Islanders has quickly changed the free agency landscape. Suddenly, teams that have been drooling over the chance to sign star center John Tavares are beginning to question whether it’s just a dream.Tavares, who is by far the top-rated unrestricted free agent in this summer’s free agent class, is coming off one of his strongest seasons in his career as he posted 37 goals and 84 points in a full 82-game season despite the team’s struggles throughout the season, which resulted in not making the playoffs for a second straight year. His best season came in 2014-15 when he had 38 goals and 86 points, so the 27-year-old is at the top of his game.Regardless, he has refrained from signing or even mentioning signing an extension during the season and has said he would like to test the free agent market. Steve Kerr on Chris Paul injury: ‘It’s a shame’
Steve Kerr knows the Houston Rockets are a much lesser opponent when Chris Paul cannot be on the floor, but the Golden State Warriors coach would rather see the star point guard suit up in the Western Conference Finals.With Paul out because of a hamstring injury, the Warriors blew the doors off Houston in the second half of Game 6 on Saturday. Prior to the win, Kerr seemed genuinely sympathetic toward CP3.“More than anything, I feel bad for Chris,” Kerr said, per Tim MacMahon of ESPN.com. “The guy’s a phenomenal player and competitor and pretty much willed his team the last two games.
