Tyronn Lue reveals he’s being treated for anxiety

Tyronn Lue has stated he feels much better ever since taking a leave of absence during the regular season, and Lue’s return to health appears to be how he is being treated for anxiety.A statement released by the Cavaliers upon Lue’s leave of absence noted the coach was suffering from “chest pains and other troubling symptoms, compounded by a loss of sleep.” Lue returned for the last few games of the regular season, although he has since admitted he may have came back a bit too soon. The Cleveland Cavaliers head coach revealed a battery of tests determined anxiety was in large part the cause of his health issues. “I’m glad it wasn’t anything serious,” Lue told ESPN’s Rachel Nichols ahead of Game 1 of the NBA Finals Thursday night. “Just anxiety, and the medication I’m on is great. No more chest pains, so everything’s been great.”The two weeks Lue was away from the Cavaliers helped him figure out the lifestyle changes that were needed to get his health back on track.“I think for the first time in my career, 20 y

Colangelo suspected of having burner accounts with Raptors?

Had the Philadelphia 76ers done more research before hiring Bryan Colangelo, they may have learned that operating burner accounts on social media and other websites is something the general manager has a history with — allegedly, of course. On the “Sixers Beat” podcast this week, Derek Bodner of The Athletic revealed that he spoke with several NBA executives who said it is an “open secret” that Colangelo operated anonymous RealGM accounts when he worked in the Toronto Raptors’ front office.“These guys care very much about how they’re perceived publicly. They read everything they can,” Bodner said. “The way it was described to me, and these are other executives’ words, is that there’s basically an open secret that at one point during his Toronto tenure he had what many suspected were burner RealGM accounts.”For those who are unfamiliar with it, RealGM has hosted NBA forums for many years. As Bodner noted, that would have been what Colangelo and others used before Twitter and other social media sites became so p

Kaepernick’s lawyer: Witness decided to 'dime out' NFL in collusion case

The attorney representing Colin Kaepernick in his collusion case against the NFL is very confident that a judge is going to rule in the quarterback’s favor, and it sounds as though a key witness is the main reason for that.On Tuesday, Kaepernick’s lawyer Mark Geragos told the “Straight Aim” podcast that one NFL team owner testified under oath that he changed his mind about signing Colin Kaepernick after Donald Trump ripped NFL players for national anthem protests.“[We] got an owner under penalty of perjury testifying that he changed his mind after he was told what Trump said,” Geragos said, as transcribed by TMZ Sports.“The only reason — and the owners will admit that — they haven’t signed [Kaepernick] is they’re afraid of Trump, and they’ve colluded because of Trump.”Geragos doubled down in an appearance on CNN Wednesday night, saying that Kaepernick’s case is about to take a “dramatic turn” and that “somebody has decided they were going to dime out the NFL for what they were doing.”Proving collusion will be

WATCH: Nike drops new LeBron James ad on eve of NBA Finals

Nike knows a thing or two about striking while the iron is hot. So, it makes perfect sense that the company debuted a brand-new LeBron James commercial on the eve of the superstar’s eighth consecutive appearance in the NBA Finals. The new commercial, titled “The Tattoo,” traces the origin story of his famous “CHOSEN 1” tattoo. In it, a younger James is shown presenting a Las Vegas tattoo shop artist a piece of paper back in 2002.“You sure this is what you want?” the tattoo artist asks. James replies, “Yes sir.” The artist remarks, “If you say so.”“After the artist walks away for a moment, the camera pans to a smirking James and then shows the piece of paper with ‘CHOSEN 1’ on it,” via Cleveland.com. “Of course, that’s not only the giant tattoo James has across his upper back, but it’s also the phrase used on the cover of the Sports Illustrated cover story about the high school prodigy back in 2002.”“I was worried, that we were going to ruin the kid’s life by putting him on the cover,” Grant Wahl, who wrote the

Holtby more focused on Stanley Cup than his incredible save

Braden Holtby made one of the most amazing saves in Stanley Cup playoff history on Wednesday, but the Washington Capitals goalie has no time to pat himself on the back after he single-handedly preserved a win for his team.Holtby’s seemingly impossible paddle save came in the third period with the Capitals leading 3-2 over the Las Vegas Golden Knights. The keeper later told reporters he is focused on winning a championship, not what Twitter is saying about him. It’s admirable of Holtby to be modest, but he deserves every bit of praise he has received. Just look at this save: Holtby stopped 37 of 39 shots he faced to help Washington tie the series at 1-1. Even his own teammates were at a loss for words over the third period save.

LeBron 'never really bought into' notion of age limiting him

To LeBron James, age is nothing but a number. The seemingly ageless 33-year-old, who likened himself to fine wine earlier this season , dismissed the notion that his advancing age somehow puts a “ceiling” on what he can accomplish. “They always kind of talked about the NBA prime is like 27 [until] like 31, 32. That’s if you’re lucky, you’ll get to that point,” James said Wednesday, via ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. “I don’t know. I’ve just never really bought into that. I’ve never bought into a ceiling, either. You guys [in the media] talked about what’s your ceiling, and I’ve always kind of told you guys that I don’t really have a ceiling. I want to just try to maximize as much as I can and be as good as I can.”James is making his eighth consecutive appearance in the NBA Finals with Game 1 against the Golden State Warriors on Thursday night. Zinedine Zidane steps down as Real Madrid manager

Nothing good lasts forever, but Thursday morning brought with it one heckuva shock to the football world. Zinedine Zidane, manager of Real Madrid for the past three seasons, is stepping down. No, he’s not being let go. This isn’t one of those ‘by mutual consent’ decisions. Zidane is choosing to walk away from Madrid after three seasons in charge. Of course, this comes just days after securing their third consecutive Champions League title. But according to Zidane himself, per ESPN’s Dermot Corrigan, it’s time for a change.“I am doing this for the good of this team, for this club,” Zidane starts. “…I want to end with Real Madrid when everything is going well. …This the right moment to end things well.”So, what’s the biggest reason why Zidane believes change is necessary? To put it simply, he doesn’t know how much more he can do. Rather, he doesn’t know how much more success he is capable of leading them towards. Therefore, he’s stepping a side. It’s a noble move, of course. But it still comes as a shock. After

While the player is “making progress,” he is still in pain and his left knee remains inflamed, meaning he’ll be evaluated again prior to Game 2. Last we heard, Iguodala was still trying to figure out what, precisely, was causing his injury. While he appears to be getting better, progress has been slow, and it doesn’t appear that anyone has any real idea of when Iguodala will be able to take the court again.

Carlos Gomez doubles down on MLB drug testing criticism

Carlos Gomez is currently in the middle of his 12th season in the majors, and needless to say, he’s seen plenty. In fact, he just keeps calling out Major League Baseball. More specifically, he’s calling out the drug testing program. Not only does he believe it isn’t random, but he wants the league to prove to him that it is. And he’s not going to stop talking about it until it does.Per ESPN, Gomez just isn’t backing down.“They tell you that it’s random, that they do the tests randomly and those players who go out there, go and do a drug test,” he starts. “Until they prove to me that it is random, I will not believe it. The Rockets took a 54-43 lead into halftime, but they did not make a single 3-pointer in the third quarter and missed a truly mind-boggling amount of consecutive 3-point attempts.Morey made no secret about the fact that he wanted to knock off the Warriors, but Chris Paul’s hamstring injury was simply too much to overcome. The lack of veteran leadership hurt the Rockets and prevented them from being able

Bryce Harper robs HR, throws ball to fan in upper deck

Bryce Harper made one lucky fan’s day Monday during a Washington Nationals game in Baltimore against the Orioles after robbing Andrew Susac of a home run.The play Harper made was pretty sweet by itself. Then, on his way to the dugout after ending the fifth inning with that spectacular nab, Harper launched the ball all the way up into the third deck — the announcers initially thought he threw it out of the stadium — where one lucky Nationals fan was there to receive it.

Ainge: Celtics ‘much, much better’ with Irving, Hayward

The Boston Celtics went on a deeper playoff run than anyone expected, and they did it all without Gordon Hayward and Kyrie Irving. That has led some fans to wonder if they would be better off trading the former rather than messing with a good thing, but the man who is in charge of making a move like that believes that talk is silly. On Sunday, Celtics president Danny Ainge was asked if trading Hayward or Irving will be a consideration this offseason.“I get a kick out of the fact that, everywhere I go, people don’t think we need Kyrie or need Gordon Hayward,” Ainge said, per ESPN’s Chris Forsberg. “I have a much longer memory and remember how great those guys were and what an effort it took us to get them. I also remember how great they are and how young they are still.“So we need Gordon and Kyrie, absolutely need them. If this playoff run and all the series of the playoffs didn’t show that, then I don’t know what does. We were able to win some games and we were able to fight through some tough battles, but we’

Braves announce Ronald Acuña Jr. has mild ACL sprain, place him on DL

Atlanta Braves superstar Ronald Acuña Jr. has been officially placed on the 10-day DL after an MRI showed a mild ACL sprain and knee contusion on his left knee, along with a lower back contusion. The injuries occurred during Sunday’s game, when Acuña took an awkward fall, resulting in a brief hospital stay. This is actually great news, because the injury initially appeared to be one that could have resulted in a much more serious aftermath, such as a torn ACL and potentially other knee ligaments.Acuña is hitting .265/.326/.453 with five home runs in 117 at-bats on the season.

Isiah Thomas: LeBron James 'a much better' player than Michael Jordan was

Isiah Thomas played many games against His Airness, Michael Jordan, back in the day, and what he’s seen LeBron James to makes him believe The King trumps his old rival.Taking this whole Jordan vs. James debate to another level, Thomas not only said that James is better, he went even further during an appearance on ESPN’s “Get Up!” Thomas said, “with no disrespect to Jordan,” that, “What I’m witnessing in LeBron James is a complete basketball player dominating this period of time,” he said. “I haven’t seen anyone else do that in our league with the exception of two people. That’s Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Bill Russell.”“But when you talk about just a basketball player, a complete basketball player, LeBron James is a much better basketball player than Michael Jordan.”Some might wonder if this isn’t a way for Thomas to poke his old rival in the eyes. But it sure seemed like he was sincere in his evaluation. And in terms of being an overall player who can do it all on the court, James actually is a more complete pl

Rays' bullpen strategy leads to five-inning save

The Tampa Bay Rays are trying to do things a little differently these days. And on Sunday, it would lead to something not seen since 2002. And while there’s an argument to be made against this strategy, the Rays did make it work against the Baltimore Orioles. Sergio Romo made another start, only lasting 0.1 inning before giving way to Vidal Nuño — who would get Tampa Bay through the next three despite surrendering four walks. But then in came Austin Pruitt, a hurler who made eight starts last season but served out of the bullpen for 22 of his 30 appearances. Pruitt would pitch the final 5.2 innings, yielding no runs along the way. But that’s not all. He would enter in the fourth with the Rays already up 7-3. But since Romo didn’t pitch through five (obviously), Nuño would be in line for the win. Therefore, Pruitt would’ve been in position to pick up quite the special save — a five-inning one. And he did just that, striking out five over the final 5.2 innings while not allowing a single run.And now, he’s the fi

49ers now on Dez Bryant's radar?

Dez Bryant‘s free agency stay has surpassed the 40-day mark, and the NFC East teams he announced were at the top of his list have yet to show interest in him. It’s possible Bryant is willing to turn his attention elsewhere now that OTAs are in full swing. The eight-year wide receiver stirred the pot a bit on Instagram recently, responding to a question (h/t NinersNation.com) about what team he now wanted to play for in 2018 with “49ers.”Bryant quickly deleted this reply, and the 49ers have not shown any known interest in him. But this response represents the latest clue from a player whose market resides in an interesting place.A somewhat recent report suggested teams are not eager to sign the mercurial pass-catcher, whom the Cowboys cut three years into a five-year contract. In addition to the NFC East teams, the Packers have also kept the 29-year-old target at arm’s length. The Ravens have been the only known Bryant suitor, and he turned down their offer. As for the 49ers, they already have a veteran possessi

Marcus Smart: I'm worth more than $12M-14M

In the wake of their Eastern Conference Finals loss to the Cavaliers, the Celtics will face a number of important roster decisions this offseason, with Marcus Smart‘s looming restricted free agency among the issues on the club’s docket. Asked about the possibility that the C’s might not be able – or willing – to pay $12-14M per year to retain him, Smart told ESPN’s Jackie MacMullan that price may actually be too low for him.“To be honest, I’m worth more than $12-14 million,” Smart said. “Just for the things I do on the court that don’t show up on the stat sheet. You don’t find guys like that. I always leave everything on the court, every game. Tell me how many other players can say that.”Smart, 24, has never been a reliable shooter or scorer since entering the NBA. His .367 FG% in 2017/18 matched a career high, and his .301 3PT% was only a little better than his career rate. Battling a thumb injury in the Eastern Finals, Smart shot .328/.226/.722 against Cleveland, including 1-for-10 in the decisive Game 7.St

Dan Gilbert tight-lipped about LeBron James' future

While LeBron James‘ upcoming free agency will be the biggest storyline of the NBA offseason, James himself has avoided discussing his future all season long, and the Cavaliers – including owner Dan Gilbert – are following suit. LeBron, Jeff Green lead Cavs to the NBA Finals

Marcus Smart was absolutely right following Game 6. There was nothing pretty about Game 7 Sunday night in Boston. But it did end with a familiar picture: LeBron James going to the NBA Finals. In fact, it’s his eighth straight Finals appearance. And it took the king playing all 48 minutes to get him there. But this time, he wasn’t alone. While the Cavaliers didn’t have Kevin Love to turn to Sunday night, Jeff Green would fill in. And he would do an admirable job as well, one might say.By the end of the night, Green put up 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting to go along with eight rebounds. Tristan Thompson put up 10 while J.R. Smith added 12, but the Cavaliers as a team shot just 9-of-36 (25 percent) from long range. And then there’s LeBron, finishing with 35 points on 12-of-24 from the field to go along with 15 rebounds and nine assists. Eight turnovers be damned, he’s the reason the Cavaliers are on their way to another NBA Finals. What happens after this is fairly easy to see — Kyrie Irving isn’t walking through

D'Antoni: CP3 'probably doubtful,' will be game-time decision

The Houston Rockets still have no idea whether starting point guard Chris Paul will be able to play Monday night when they host the Golden State Warriors for Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals.Speaking to reporters on Sunday, head coach Mike D’Antoni said that he doesn’t think Paul has even tested the hamstring at all yet. He also said Paul is “probably doubtful” for the upcoming pivotal game. Paul’s absence was keenly felt by Houston in Game 6 Saturday night in Oakland. The Rockets turned the ball over an absurd 21 times, and both the offense and defense fell apart in the second half in the blowout loss. In particular, James Harden, burdened with being the team’s primary ball handler with Paul on the bench, struggled. He ended up turning the ball over nine times, which matched Paul’s turnovers in the entire series.Needless to say, the Rockets are crossing their fingers hoping Paul can play in Game 7.

Nick Young: Dennis Rodman gave me advice in a dream

When one thinks of Nick Young, one of the last words that will come up is defense. More often, things along the lines of ill-advised three’s, his drama with D’Angelo Russell, and his “Swaggy P” nickname. However, on Saturday night Young came off the bench and played great wing defense in the second half of the Golden State Warriors’ 115-86 throttling of the Houston Rockets in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals. Young stated after the game that his increased defensive effort was a result of a dream he had the previous night. If one had a choice of a defensive player to rely upon deep in the NBA playoffs, Rodman is on top of the list. So, it looks like the right guy emerged in Young’s dream if that’s what is behind his uptick in intensity on the defensive end of the court. If Young turns into an elite perimeter defender now — this could be the real-life version of when Babe Ruth appeared in the dream of Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez and inspired him to get the ball.Golden State now heads to Houston for Game 7 M

Bruce Bochy: Madison Bumgarner could return on Friday

The San Francisco Giants have been without ace Madison Bumgarner all season. But prior to Sunday’s game, manager Bruce Bochy left the door open for Bumgarner to possibly return as early as Friday. In his first rehab assignment on Saturday, Bumgarner allowed no runs, no hits, walked one, and struck out eight in 3.2 innings for Triple-A Sacramento.Bumgarner sustained a fracture to his throwing hand in what likely would have been his final spring training appearance before Opening Day.The Giants enter Sunday’s game with the Chicago Cubs at an unimpressive 25-27, but are only 2.5 games out of first place in the National League West. Should San Francisco fall out of contention, it’s been reported that Bumgarner could be available. Then again, a healthy Bumgarner could go a long way in keeping the Giants around in the NL West race.

The culture of the New England Patriots is not for everyone.Defensive end Cassius Marsh, now with the San Francisco 49ers, was one of those who found it disagreeable. Marsh felt that he was misused as a coverage linebacker, adding that playing there was enough to make him doubt his desire to play football.“They asked me to do a bunch of stuff that I had never done: covering running backs and receivers and basically almost never rushing the passer, which is what I did in playing defensive line,” Marsh said, via Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle. “They don’t have fun there. There’s nothing fun about it. There’s nothing happy about it. I didn’t enjoy any of my time there, you know what I’m saying? It made me for the first time in my life think about not playing football because I hated it that much.”Marsh played nine games with the Patriots in 2017, but was waived in November after confronting Bill Belichick following a game in which he played just two snaps against the Oakland Raiders.“I confronted (Be

Padres acquire Phil Hughes from Twins

The Padres have acquired right-hander Phil Hughes, cash and the 74th pick in June’s draft from the Twins for young catcher Janigson Villalobos, per announcements from both teams. The Twins designated Hughes for assignment earlier this week, even though they still owed him the rest of his $13.2M salary this year and another $13.2M in 2019. Now, Minnesota will eat the remainder of Hughes’ salary this year, but San Diego will pay nearly half the tab next season, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com suggests.In a best-case scenario for the rebuilding Padres, the 31-year-old Hughes would reemerge as a viable starter or reliever with the club. However, there doesn’t seem to be much hope on either front, given that Hughes has recently undergone two different surgeries to address thoracic outlet syndrome – which is often a death knell for pitchers. Those procedures ended each of Hughes’ previous two seasons prematurely, and have played a role in the bloated 5.99 ERA he has logged across 124 2/3 innings (33 appearances, 22 starts)

Report: Teddy Bridgewater’s trade value ‘trending upward’

Teddy Bridgewater was basically a forgotten man at the start of the offseason, and the New York Jets signed him to serve as an insurance policy and/or prove himself enough to inspire other teams to make trade offers. So far, he has shown he could be capable of accomplishing both of those goals for the franchise.ESPN’s Rich Cimini wrote on Sunday that the Jets “couldn’t be happier with Bridgewater” through the early portion of offseason workouts. Cimini also notes that the 25-year-old’s trade value is increasing, but he may just end up being the best man to start for the Jets. Not only did he perform well in the first practice, open to the media, but he maintained it throughout the week. While it’s too soon to wage a “Teddy-should-be-starting” campaign — his surgically repaired knee won’t be truly tested until he gets hit in a preseason game — it creates some interesting options for the Jets. Danica Patrick gets emotional talking about Indy 500 crash

On Sunday during Lap 68 of the Indy 500, Danica Patrick crashed out of the race as her car hit the outside wall, spun around and rolled backward toward the infield area.It was a very bitter way to end her racing career, as Patrick has made it clear the Indy 500 was her final professional race. Not surprisingly, she was a bit emotional afterward as she explained what happened following her release from the Infield hospital.Meghan McKeown of WISH-TV shared video of Patrick’s post-crash interview with reporters. Patrick, who broke down gender barriers in racing in a big way, also saw her NASCAR finale end in a crash as well. It’s obviously not the way she dreamed her career in racing, but there are so many factors outside the control of these drivers, and we’re just happy she got away from both wrecks unscathed.

Clayton Kershaw slated to return to mound Thursday

The Los Angeles Dodgers look like they might finally be on the upswing, and Clayton Kershaw’s imminent return should only help.Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed Sunday that Kershaw would return on Thursday from left biceps tendinitis that has kept him sidelined. Kershaw’s last start came on May 1, with his rehab picking up in recent weeks. The Dodgers have understandably been cautious not to rush him back given his importance to their team. It helps that the team has finally started to turn things around recently after a slow start, having won seven of their last nine. Kershaw’s return only serves to make them stronger, and perhaps now they can make a run in the NL West.

Twins trade Phil Hughes to Padres

The San Diego Padres have picked up a bit of pitching help. The Padres acquired Phil Hughes from the Minnesota Twins on Sunday in exchange for a minor league catcher. Hughes was designated for assignment by the Twins last week after posting a 6.75 ERA in 12 innings with the team this season. After a successful 2014, injuries have derailed his career, including a 2016 surgery to correct thoracic outlet syndrome. While other teams may have had interest, it’s the Padres who pulled the trigger in the hopes of finding something left in the 31-year-old’s arm.

Julio Jones: I'll be a Falcon forever

Julio Jones had Atlanta Falcons fans in a tizzy recently when he made some drastic changes to his Twitter account. Then those fears were stoked even more when he didn’t show up for voluntary workouts, sparking fears that he might be feeling some frustration with the organization.Well, Jones put all those fears to rest with some pretty strong statements about his team, speaking to TMZ Sports. When asked if Arthur Blank’s recent statement about Jones being a Falcon forever were true, Jones said, “Yeah, I am.” “I’m not going anywhere,” Jones said, according to TMZ Sports. “I love the team, I love the organization, I love everybody there. We’re good. “Everybody wants a story right now,” Jones said. “There’s no story to be told. I’m just working, getting myself better. I’m just working on myself right now. That’s all it is. There’s no bad blood between me and the team or anything like that. It’s just everybody on the outside trying to look in and destroy what we built there.” Jones also said he’s excited to be tea

WATCH: Zach Veach's car catches fire during pit stop at Indy 500

If you were watching the Indy 500 Sunday afternoon, you likely did a double-take midway through the race as Zach Veach was exiting Pit Lane.Flames were dancing atop his car, and then when ABC went back to the replay it showed the car, and the pit crew, had been engulfed in flames for a moment. Thankfully, Veach and his pit crew were okay, and the flames petered out quickly enough. Still, that was a frightening scene that could have potentially been a lot worse.

What are examples of tactical revolutions in sport? (i.e Baseball's "Opener", NBA's "Seven seconds or less")

There's a fascinating tactical experiment happening in baseball right now where a relief pitcher is coming into the game during the first inning, instead of the typical 8th/9th inning. More details here: http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/23558800/tampa-bay-rays-forefront-rotation-revolution

It reminds me of the tactical strategy used by the Phoenix Suns' "Seven Seconds or Less" in the early 2000's. The impact of that strategy now has a long lasting impacting on today's current NBA. Other NBA strategies are Sam Hinkie's tanking strategy for accumulating draft picks, and Tex Winter's triangle offense.

I'm curious to know what are some other smart tactical strategies that shifted their respective sports. Thanks

It’s been widely reported that Sunday’s Indy 500 would be Patrick’s final race as a pro. Thankfully, it appeared Patrick suffered no serious injuries in the crash.

Mookie Betts scratched from game due to muscle tightness

Mookie Betts was a last-second scratch for the Boston Red Sox for their game against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday, and the team says the star outfielder is dealing with some muscle tightness.According to an official announcement from the Red Sox, Betts is listed as day to day due to “left side tightness.” Considering he was in the starting lineup until the last second, it’s probably safe to assume the injury is nothing too serous. Still, it’s always a concern when your best player goes down, and Betts has been just that in Boston this year. He’s having a career year and leads baseball by a wide margin with his .359 average. His 17 home runs are also tied for the major league lead. The Red Sox shockingly moved on from one of their middle-of-the-order bats this week, so Betts would be missed if he is forced to sit out multiple games.

He was hitting only .255 before going down with the injury, though he did have eight home runs in the early stages of the season.

Kemba Walker could be prime trade candidate this summer

The lack of teams with cap space and a weak crop of free agent point guards could work to the Hornets’ advantage if they decide to trade Kemba Walker, writes Rick Bonnell of The Charlotte Observer. That’s the assessment of ESPN’s Bobby Marks, a former executive with the Nets, who thinks Walker will reach his peak trade value this summer. Walker has one year left on his contract, and Marks states that teams would rather pick up a player in the offseason rather than close to the trade deadline.Addressing trade rumors during the season, team owner Michael Jordan said he would only consider moving Walker if it meant getting an All-Star in return. Marks considers that unrealistic, saying a lottery pick is likely the best the Hornets can hope for. The franchise is near the tax threshold and would like to unload one of its expensive contracts in any Walker deal, but Marks says that will only happen if Walker’s new team gets assurances he will re-sign.There’s more today from Charlotte: Hassan Whiteside would help th

Yankees may be interested in Cole Hamels

The Rangers may trade left-hander Cole Hamels in the next couple months, and “it looks like the Yankees could be interested,” Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe writes. Although the Yankees are among 20 teams on Hamels’ no-trade list, the 34-year-old suggested earlier this week that he wouldn’t block a move to a contender. New York certainly looks as if it’ll contend all season, which would appeal to Hamels, and the team figures to end up acquiring him or another legitimate starter at some point this summer. General manager Brian Cashman pointed to his pitching staff as an area that he could address Saturday, before Sonny Gray continued his disappointing season with an ugly start against the Angels.Regardless of whether the Yankees go outside for help, they should get back a rotation reinforcement, lefty Jordan Montgomery, in the coming weeks. Montgomery, who has been out since May 2 with an elbow strain, is “progressing” without any issues, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com tweets. The second-year man is three-plus weeks

Tom Brady tosses football on mega-yacht at F1 Monaco Grand Prix

Whether it is a backyard, in the frigid conditions of Gillette Stadium during a New England Patriots playoff game, or … on the water in the summer — expect Tom Brady to always be tossing around the pigskin somewhere in the world. Footage has surfaced of Brady throwing footballs on a mega-yacht while attending the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix. To nobody’s surprise, Brady completed the pass on the first try. Although, the pass almost proved to be an errant one due to a late reaction by the receiver, before a Wes Welker-esque adjustment was made.Seeing quarterbacks dropping dimes in such a manner has been seen before, as two QBs from from this year’s NFL Draft class,  Sam Darnold and Mason Rudolph, have engaged in such antics. As far as degree of difficulty, the edge should be given to the rookies, as throwing to a Jet ski on a post route to the center of the water is pretty impressive. However, these two young signal-callers obviously have a long way to go before they’re on the level of Tom Terrific on the rea

Jon Gruden brags about everything he has stolen from Chiefs

The Oakland Raiders were more than happy to sign Derrick Johnson after the Kansas City Chiefs released the veteran linebacker, and Jon Gruden describes the move as just the latest in a long line of division rival theft. In a recent conference call with Raiders season season ticket holders, Gruden was asked about the Raiders improving the middle of their defense. He took the opportunity to sing the praises of Johnson and openly wonder why the Chiefs gave him up.“Well, we feel like we have solidified the middle of our defense big time,” Gruden said, via Pete Grathoff of the Kansas City Star. “We added Derrick Johnson, the all-time leading tackler in Kansas City Chief history. He started every game for them last year, they were the division champions.”Gruden feels like the Raiders stole Johnson from KC, and he says it is not the first time that has happened.“Last time I was here in Oakland, we stole (quarterback) Rich Gannon from Kansas City, we took (receiver) Andre Rison from the Chiefs, we took (defensive back

Vegas GM McPhee has had a hand in building both Stanley Cup teams

While much of the attention to this year’s Stanley Cup will go towards the players, especially Washington Capitals’ Alex Ovechkin and Vegas Golden Knights’ Marc-Andre Fleury, much of the spotlight should be shining on the Golden Knights’ general manager, George McPhee. The GM, who also worked as the general manager from 1997 to 2014 of the Washington Capitals, has had a hand in more than 75 percent of the players that will be on the ice on Monday.McPhee is already responsible for putting together the Golden Knights roster from Fleury to William Karlsson to Jon Marchessault, to the often criticized deadline moves of acquiring Tomas Tatar and Ryan Reaves, both who have scored critical goals in the postseason. According to NBC Sports Tarik El-Bashir, not only has he had a hand in every player the Golden Knights have on their roster from Day 1, McPhee also is responsible for 13 of the team’s 25 players on their roster who have played in this year’s playoffs. As the Capitals general manager, McPhee was responsible

Cristiano Ronaldo isn’t ruling out a Real Madrid exit

At this point, Cristiano Ronaldo is synonymous with Real Madrid. That’s nothing new to anybody who’s been watching the game for the past decade. But yesterday was special even for him. With their 3-1 victory over Liverpool in the Champions League Final, Madrid would capture their third consecutive continental crown. That’s historic on its own, of course. But now Ronaldo has five such honors to himself, including one with Manchester United (2007-08).Aside from a World Cup trophy, there’s nothing he hasn’t won. Portugal would capture the Euro back in 2016, ending the international dry spell. And while it’s going to be an uphill battle for Portugal at the World Cup, that’s all he’s got left to capture. In the meantime, though, he’s not ruling out a Madrid exit. Per ESPN’s Dermot Corrigan, Ronaldo didn’t mince words after the Final triumph.“Now is the time to enjoy this. And in the coming days you will have my answer to the fans, the ones who have really been on my side. It has been very nice being at Real Madrid

Packers' new offensive staff working on play design

We heard last month that the Packers would be going “back to Page 1” of their playbook, but as Jason Wilde of the Wisconsin State Journal writes, Green Bay is not going to be making any wholesale changes to its offense. In light of all of the new voices on the offensive side of the ball this year — Joe Philbin is back as OC, Frank Cignetti Jr. is in as quarterbacks coach, and there are several other staff changes besides — it made sense for all involved to thoroughly review the team’s play design and philosophy. But as Philbin said, “It’s been a process of refining, enhancing, tweaking, as opposed to, ‘Yeah we scrubbed it down.’ Yes, we went page by page. (But) we’re not starting from scratch here. These players in that locker room, they’ve done some great things.” Philbin, of course, is primarily referring to star quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers indicated that verbiage has changed — and Philbin acknowledged that such changes were made in order to streamline the playcalling — and that has created something

Jeff Green to start in place of Kevin Love in Game 7

The Cleveland Cavaliers will be without Kevin Love in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals on Sunday, and they are hoping Jeff Green can be the one to pick up most of the slack.Cavs head coach Ty Lue told reporters at Sunday morning’s shootaround that Green will start in place of Love, who is out with a concussion. Green had his best game of the series and arguably the entire postseason in Game 6, as he scored 14 points and blocked two shots. Brad Stevens and the Boston Celtics will have had more time to prepare for facing him heading into Sunday’s game, but Cleveland will likely need Green to be equally effective in order to win on the road.Love ended up in the NBA’s concussion protocol after a nasty collision with Jayson Tatum on Friday night. He has averaged 12.5 points and 9.8 rebounds per game during the series.

Teams worrying John Tavares could stay with Islanders

The addition of Lou Lamoriello to the New York Islanders has quickly changed the free agency landscape. Suddenly, teams that have been drooling over the chance to sign star center John Tavares are beginning to question whether it’s just a dream.Tavares, who is by far the top-rated unrestricted free agent in this summer’s free agent class, is coming off one of his strongest seasons in his career as he posted 37 goals and 84 points in a full 82-game season despite the team’s struggles throughout the season, which resulted in not making the playoffs for a second straight year. His best season came in 2014-15 when he had 38 goals and 86 points, so the 27-year-old is at the top of his game.Regardless, he has refrained from signing or even mentioning signing an extension during the season and has said he would like to test the free agent market. Between the team’s troubles of finding a permanent home (their new arena is still years away) and the team’s inability to provide a stable winning environment, many people

Steve Kerr on Chris Paul injury: ‘It’s a shame’

Steve Kerr knows the Houston Rockets are a much lesser opponent when Chris Paul cannot be on the floor, but the Golden State Warriors coach would rather see the star point guard suit up in the Western Conference Finals. With Paul out because of a hamstring injury, the Warriors blew the doors off Houston in the second half of Game 6 on Saturday. Prior to the win, Kerr seemed genuinely sympathetic toward CP3.“More than anything, I feel bad for Chris,” Kerr said, per Tim MacMahon of ESPN.com. “The guy’s a phenomenal player and competitor and pretty much willed his team the last two games. He’s just been haunted by these types of injuries in his career, and it’s a shame. I hate when anybody gets hurt.”There has been no word on whether or not Paul will play in Game 7 on Monday, but ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that it does not look good. While the Warriors are dealing with a significant injury of their own, Game 6 left little doubt as to how much Houston misses Paul. Eric Gordon got off to a hot start and scor
