In 2014, I broke down the qualifications an NBA team must reach in order to be considered a dynasty. I did this by extracting the eight most important traits of the NBA’s two greatest dynasties — the Boston Celtics of the 1960s and the Chicago Bulls of the 1990s — and then measuring where other potential dynasties fell on that spectrum. The conclusion drawn then was that a team needed to reach six of the following eight milestones in order to be considered a dynasty: Had the best player in the league for all or most of the period in question. Had multiple Hall of Famers in or near their primes. They had, without question, the best coach of their era. They won at least three championships in a row. None of their championships came with glaring asterisks. Even if you consider the league particularly weak in a given stretch (which people have for these teams), there was never any question that their championships were won fairly, on the court.
